Cosmetology

Wilson Community College Cosmetic Arts CenterLearn the fundamentals of cosmetology in a simulated hands-on environment. Courses are designed to provide students with the appropriate training and required number of contact hours needed to fulfill licensure requirements in accordance with the NC State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners. Topics may include, but are not limited to, cosmetology theory and practical training, fingerwaving, hairstyling, hair cutting, shampooing, skin, nails, hair coloring, wigs, bacteriology, sanitation, chemistry, and salon management.

Courses Offered

The Cosmetology program takes 3-4 semesters to complete and consists of 3 courses.

Cosmetology I
Cosmetology II
Cosmetology III

Upon successful completion of Cosmetology I, II, and III, students are qualified to take the NC State Board of Cosmetic Art Examination.

Cosmetology classes run Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., with 30-minute lunch.

All classes are held at the WCC Cosmetic Arts Center at 2616 Forest Hills Road.

Registration

  • All Cosmetology and Natural Hair students must provide a copy of their social security card and driver’s license on the first day of class.
  • Interested students are required to take the Cosmetic Arts Center placement test prior to registration.
  • To schedule a placement test, please contact Tonya Brinkley at 252-246-1356 or email tbrinkley@wilsoncc.edu.
  • Must score 75% to enroll.
  • Upon successful completion of placement testing, students will be notified of the steps to complete their enrollment.

Natural Hair Care

The Natural Hair Care program is designed to teach how to care for natural hair without the use of chemical such as perms/relaxers and hair color. the style techniques include braiding, twisting, wrapping, extending and locking natural hair. The coursework also includes teaching the proper health, safety, and sanitation procedures to avoid spreading infections.

The students will be able to apply their skills to clients who visit the clinic. The 300-hour coursework is completed in two semesters.

After successfully completing the Natural Hair Care program, students will be eligible to sit for the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts exam to become licensed Natural Hair Care Specialists.

Guest Services

Cosmetology services are walk-in only Monday through Friday. Guests may sign in as early as 8:00 a.m. each day.  Services are done exclusively by students.

Natural Hair services are by appointment and walk-in.  Services are provided on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Please call 252-243-3158 or email Margie Norfleet at mnorfleet@wilsoncc.edu to schedule an appointment.
