WCC Makes a Shift in January Opening Plans

At Wilson Community College, the health and safety of our students, employees, and guests continues to be our highest priority as we enter into the new year.  We initially prepared to return from the holiday break, full-speed-ahead, on Monday, January 3.

But as COVID-19 cases continue to reach record levels and the highly-transmissible Omicron variant becoming more widespread, and also to mitigate countywide spread and further workforce disruption, it became necessary for us to adjust our plans for the start of the spring semester.

Classes began as scheduled on Thursday, January 6, but almost all instruction is being delivered virtually, and WCC employees are currently working remotely or are on staggered work schedules, until at least Monday, January 17.  A few healthcare-related classes and first responder trainings remain in-person out of necessity.  And some Con Ed classes are postponed for a couple of weeks — we hope not longer, but we’ll just have to see.  Conditions will be further assessed as we near January 17 to determine the safest and most responsible way to provide classes and services.

We hope offering virtual classes for two weeks will allow time for the post-holiday surge of the virus to subside, and will avoid prolonged disruptions to instruction.  Our Bookstore, Library, and all other offices on campus will remain open during regular business hours, however there may be limitations on scheduling and the use of certain resources.

Masking indoors and social distancing remain in effect on campus.  We encourage that highest-quality masks be worn, but many of those are hard to find.  In response to that, we have purchased more masks and even disposable PM2.5 filters to insert into those masks.

We’re committed to keeping our community safe, and we feel we’re at least doing our part by shifting how we operate temporarily.  Hopefully this wave will pass fairly quickly and we can get back to a more-normal way of doing things. We certainly hope so.
