Wilson Community College recently welcomed two new faces to lead two large divisions, and we’re thrilled with the knowledge and expertise they bring.
On June 1, Wes Hill assumed the role of Dean of Continuing Education at Wilson Community College. He was the College’s Dean of Business and Applied Technologies before assuming his new opportunity.
WCC was fortunate to find Allisha Hicks to take over as the new Dean of Business and Applied Technologies. Ms. Hicks is a United States Navy Veteran, who holds an Associate in Applied Science in Computer Systems Applications, a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, and a Master’s degree in Human Services. She most recently served as an Associate Dean at Halifax Community College before coming to Wilson.
Ms. Hicks said, “Applying for the position of Dean of Business and Applied Technologies at Wilson Community College provided an opportunity to share what I have learned and help others reach their goals, whether it is inside or outside of the classroom. I also wanted the opportunity to grow as an individual and in the higher education profession. This role will allow me to step outside my comfort zone and challenge me to think outside the box.”
The programs she manages include Accounting and Finance, Business Administration, Criminal Justice Technology, Culinary Arts, Information Technology, Medical Office Administration, Office Administration, and Paralegal Technology. It’s safe to say she has a lot on her plate, but she’s up for the challenge, and we know she will do well.
WCC also has a new Dean of Allied Health & Sciences, Dr. Miranda Yelverton. She oversees our Associate Degree Nursing, Practical Nursing, Surgical Technology, and Associate in General Education – Nursing programs.
Dr. Yelverton’s educational journey actually started at a community college too, where she received her Associate Degree of Nursing, and then went on to get an Associate in Arts degree, a Bachelor’s in nursing, and a Master’s degree in nursing with a concentration in nursing education. She’s a board-certified nurse executive and a certified nurse educator. And she also holds a doctorate degree in nursing with a concentration in leadership.
Before coming to WCC, she served as a nursing instructor at another community college, and she’s also worked in acute care, psychiatric, and long-term care.
Dr. Yelverton shared, “I have found the best way to improve healthcare is to start with education. I enjoy preparing students who aspire to enter healthcare. Sharing the knowledge of how to holistically care for others and improve the quality of life of the people we serve is rewarding. I enjoy leading and mentoring instructors to transform the classroom and use active learning to teach students and prepare them for national exams, and to care for others. I want to ensure we are producing high-quality holistic students to enter the workforce and care for the populations we serve.”
