This course prepares students to perform basic nursing skills for patients or residents in a health care related setting. Coursework includes lecture/class, laboratory, and clinical learning experiences. Upon successful completion of the Nurse Aide I course, students will be eligible to take the NC Nurse Aide I State Exam.
Student’s successfully completing the Nurse Aide I course and passing the NC Nurse Aide I State Exam, will be eligible for listing with the Division of Health Service Regulations on the Nurse Aide Level I Registry in North Carolina. Initial listing is valid for two years following the written skills evaluation.
The Nurse Aide will work under the supervision and direction of a licensed nurse.
Application Requirements
Step 1:
Limited seats are available on a first-come/first-served basis. Before starting this process, check the Continuing Education Schedule for availability.
Note that available seats may be filled before students complete Step 2. In this case, students may be able to register for an upcoming term.
Step 2:
Wilson Community College only recognizes and utilizes the Viewpoint Screening platform. Students must sign up for Viewpoint Screening ($120). This includes a completed background check, drug testing, immunization verification, and documentation of an active CPR certification. All information should be uploaded into Viewpoint. You will be required to provide personal information, a valid email address, and payment information during sign-up. This will occur on the first day of class starting. During the first day of class (orientation) the instructor will assist you in Viewpoint. Financial payment of $120.00 and copies of vaccinations are required.
Disclaimer: Clinical agencies may deny students from completing clinical rotations based on the results of the criminal background check and drug screening. Students may not be eligible if they have a positive drug screening or felony offenses (may include misdemeanors).
Explanation of the Viewpoint Requirements:
Background Check:
- Criminal background checks must be completed and uploaded into Viewpoint by the end of the second week of class.
- Students whose criminal background documentation is not completed or is denied by the clinical agency will be dropped from the class.
Drug Testing:
- Viewpoint will provide instructions on which lab students should go to in order to complete the urine drug screen.
- Students whose drug testing is not completed or is denied by the clinical agency will be dropped from the class.
Immunizations:
Proof of the following immunizations must be uploaded into Viewpoint:
- Two TB skin tests required (cannot be longer than 9 months prior to the start of class date).
- Each student must have a second TB skin test done and turned in by the start date of class.
- Two MMR (Mumps, Measles, Rubella) injections or Titer (blood test to prove immunity)
- Three Hepatitis B or two Heplsav–B injections (proof of first injection must be submitted with your application)
- Two Varicella injection or Titer (blood test to prove immunity to chicken pox)
- Tdap (within the past 10 years)
- Flu injection required for flu season (Fall & Spring Semesters)
- Students may be required to show proof of COVID vaccination at the request of the clinical site.
CPR:
- Students who do not have an active CPR certification can sign up to complete a CPR course through the College.

Step 3:
Once you have completed Step 2 (or at a minimum have the immunization records uploaded in Viewpoint), upload the following required information into Viewpoint.
- Copies of one of the following are required and must be submitted with your registration:
- High School Diploma, High School Equivalency, or Transcript
- OR, TABE test performance with results of an 8th grade reading level
- OR, if currently enrolled in high school, Principal’s approval
- Valid government-issued (unexpired photo ID) required to take the Nurse Aide I State Exam
- Social Security Card (must be signed, non-laminated) required to take the Nurse Aide I State Exam
- CPR Certification Card (must be by American Heart Association)
Step 4:
Email the Health Care Program Coordinator to confirm you have the necessary information in Viewpoint for registration approval.
Once approval to register is received, register through the Continuing Education Online Registration Portal. Payment of student fees will be due at the time of registration.

- Registration – $180.00
- Technology Fee – $5.00
- Security Fee – $15.00
- Malpractice insurance – $16.00
- Accident insurance – $2.00
Note: There are no fee waivers for technology and security fees.
Additional Required Costs
- Uniforms are required starting on day one of class and are to be worn for each session in class/lecture, lab, and clinicals. Uniforms consist of a navy blue scrub top and pants, along with white socks and white leather shoes.
- An Analog watch (watch with second hand) is required.
- Required textbook, NC Nurse Aide I, available at the Wilson Community College Bookstore.
- Students will register for the NC Nurse Aide I State Exam through Credentia. Student accounts will be set up with CNA 365. All students are required to have a valid email address. Students are to use their Wilson Community College email address provided to them at registration. Exam fees will be due upon sign-up ($140). Students are required to bring a current government issued ID with photo and a social security card (must be signed and non-laminated).
- The Division of Continuing Education recognizes and is fully supportive of clinical site agencies that choose to perform drug screening, criminal background checks, or fingerprinting of students. Costs associated with these tests are the responsibility of the student and are required unless otherwise indicated.
- Students may be required to show proof of COVID vaccination at the request of the clinical site.
